UMES' Tyson Declared Academically Ineligible For 2008-09 Season

Ed Tyson, a second-team all-MEAC men’s basketball player and leading scorer for conference out of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, has been declared academically ineligible for the 2008-09 men’s basketball season.

“Tyson has rendered himself academically ineligible and will no longer be part of the men’s basketball program,” said Allen.

It’s not unusual for players to run into academic trouble, but for Tyson to neglect academics going into his senior season rings several alarms across the board. One, where were his priorities that shifted so late into his collegiate career? Two, where was the scrutiny from the university on the bright spot of their basketball program?

I don’t have all of the facts that could possibly cast a different light on this situation, but the truth is that one of the best guards in the conference will not be playing next season, and there are never any clear answers for a situation like this.
