Southern Offers Stump Mitchell Head Football Coaching Position

In the most shocking move of 2009 in black college sports, Southern University has formally offered its head coaching position to current Washington Redskins running backs coach and former Morgan State head football coach Stump Mitchell.

“Importantly, at the collegiate and professional levels, Coach Mitchell has demonstrated dedication, hard work and success.  Moreover, he has effectively instilled those values in players in his charge on both levels.  He has an excellent attitude and positive educational and athletic philosophies. While serving as head football coach at Morgan State University, his focus on academic discipline led to a substantial increase in the overall GPA of the team”, added (Southern University – Baton Rouge Chancellor Kofi) Lomotey.

Alabama State Basketball Makes Montgomery Advertiser's 'Top 10 Sports Stories of 2009'

Always nice to see black college sports joining the discussion on great local sports stories. Coming in at number eight on the top ten list of Alabama’s top ten sports moments of 2009, it’s the Alabama State Hornets winning the SWAC basketball title.

8. Alabama State wins SWAC/ plays in NCAA play-in game: Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson led the Hornets to a SWAC conference title with a 16-2 record in league play during the regular season and a victory over Jackson State in the conference title game. The Hornets played in the NCAA play-in game against Morehead State in Dayton, Ohio and lost 58-43.

Doug Williams Withdraws Name From Southern Coaching Search

From whispers of a dual athletic director/head coaching position to no interest at all, Doug Williams has withdrawn his name from the list of candidates for the Southern University head football coaching job. Rumors began flying as early as two weeks ago about Williams’ interest in the position, but he steadily downplayed them to media.
