3. Southern – 50 Points - A shootout home win over Alcorn State holds the Jaguars at three.

4. Alabama State – 45 Points – The loss to Mississippi Valley drops the Hornets significantly.

5. Alabama A&M – 35 Points – A homecoming throttling of UAPB puts the Bulldogs of A&M back in the top five.

Division II

1. Shaw – 80 Points – Despite the Bears’ stunning loss to Bowie State in the PG Classic, Shaw has enough quality wins to remain at the top spot. Unfair? Absolutely. But it’s the numbers, folks.

2. Albany State – 65 Points - Albany State must be thinking, what do we have to do to get that top spot? Upsetting a Division I program would be the most appropriate answer.

4. Elizabeth City State – 45 Points - Vikings edge St. Augustine’s on the road to remain in the top five.

5. Fort Valley State – 35 Points – The Wildcats move up with an out-of-division road win against Edward Waters.

6. Morehouse – 30 Points - The Maroon Tigers were idle, but remain in the top ten.

7. Bowie State – 25 Points – The Bulldogs might have pulled the biggest upset in all of black college football this season against Shaw.

8. Tuskegee – 15 Points - The Golden Tigers are steadily moving up. Three straight wins for TU.

9. Benedict -  15 Points – BU got creamed by Albany State, but hold tight in the top ten.

10. Virginia State -  15 Points - The Trojans break into the top ten with a big win over Fayetteville State.

Dissatisfaction at South Carolina State

Imagine the undefeated South Carolina State Bulldogs worrying about something. They are great on offense, great on defense, and aside from a collision course with Florida A&M on Oct. 17, they have very little to worry about blocking their path to a second-straight MEAC football championship.

And they still are stuck on the things they don’t do right. Even in a convincing win against Winston-Salem State last Saturday.

“If we don’t start playing better than we are right now, this will be a three-or-four loss team by the end of the season, no doubt about it,” was his (Coach Buddy Pough’s) stark assessment.

“We played OK at times on defense, and OK at times on offense, but we’re not methodical, we’re not consistent and we’re not precise in what we’re doing, especially on offense.”

Bowie State Upsets Shaw in Prince George's Football Classic

Everything appeared to be holding to form for the Shaw Bears. They forced fumbles and jumped out to an early lead against Bowie State in the Prince George’s Football Classic.

But something strange happened in the second half of the contest. All tied up at 17, the Bulldogs started believing that they indeed had the number one defense in the CIAA, and indeed had a home field advantage playing in it’s back yard. BSU clamped down on the Shaw rushing attack to force a scoreless second half, and the Bears, with very poor special teams play, eventually collapsed in two overtimes in a 31-24 loss – their first on the year.

Howard Dispatches Georgetown

They invited everybody back for this game. Celebrity alumni, distinguished graduates, everyone was to be on hand for a Hoya football party.  They hand picked the Howard Bison, fully expecting the good times to roll all throughout Northwest D.C. following the dismantling of the Mecca, or the gridiron representation of such.

And then, the unexpected happened. The new stadium, the anticipation, all of it meant nothing against a Bison team with something to prove. HU walked in without a win, and walked out with the respect of Diamond City, befitting of their 14-11 win against the equally-dismal Hoyas.
