Savannah State Awaiting Word on MEAC Application

Most of the mid-Atlantic region is still buzzing about the readmission of North Carolina Central University to the MEAC, but there is still great anticipation about Savannah State’s application to the conference.

When first reading the news about NCCU, I thought that it was a wrap for the Savannah State Tigers. Two teams that were within months of each other in trying to gain entrance into the conference, but only one was being celebrated with a press conference and national coverage. Add in the fact that MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas gave no word about SSU’s application, and there was room to assume the worst.

Apparently, SSU administrators don’t feel that way.

“North Carolina Central was two months ahead of us with their site visit. Theirs was in April. Ours was in June. At no point in this process did Dr. Thomas ever indicate to me or anyone at Savannah State that both universities would be admitted on the same date at the same time. That is not an issue with Savannah State.” – SSU V.P. of Administration Claud Flythe

If the leadership at Savannah State is confident that they will get in, there’s no reason for black college sports fans to feel uptight about it. The MEAC may be disorganized and resistant to effective communication, but you can’t say that they put out mixed signals – unless you’re talking about the MEAC/SWAC Challenge hurting the Florida Classic.
