You Can Only Hope to Contain Them…Introducing MEACFansZone

For whatever reason that got MEACFans.com shut down, you knew it would only be a matter of time before those crazy mofos got their stuff together and back online.

So it is with great zeal that I introduce MEACFansZone. While it is missing many of the aesthetic amenities that made MEACFans a destination for the knowledgeable and delusional alike, it is a stop gap measure for folks to get their hopes, trash talk and general cries for attention out to an open-armed audience.

Welcome back, MEAC fans.

Pauline Banks Headed to Texas Southern

Pauline Banks, one of the most successful track and field coaches in Division I in recent years, has resigned her position at Jackson State University to take over the Texas Southern women’s program.

Banks and her teams were a huge part of the athletic department winning three consecutive SWAC Commissioner’s Cups, given to the institution with the most athletic success across all programs. Under Banks, the Lady Tigers won back-to-back SWAC outdoor track and field championships (2008, 2009) and the 2008 indoor title. She was SWAC coach of the year in 2008 and 2009.

Banks became the first female coach at Jackson State to win an outright SWAC championship since Sadie Magee won the 1985 women’s basketball tournament.

Banks was already attracting talent out of Texas and Missouri, and being stationed in Texas will only expand her appeal to high school stars out of the Bible Belt.

Black Colleges Impacting Preseason Basketball Polls

Several HBCUs have been ranked on national preseason basketball polls in both the NCAA and NAIA.

Tougaloo College and Johnson C. Smith are ranked in the top 25 of the National Association of Basketball Coaches preseason men’s basketball poll. The TC Bulldogs went 22-11 last season, and are ranked 21st on the Association’s Division I NAIA poll. Langston University also received votes, but were 50 points behind 25th-ranked Olivet Nazarene.

Johnson C. Smith is ranked 19th in the NCAA Division II poll. The Golden Bulls defeated the Virginia Union Panthers in February of this year for their second-consecutive CIAA basketball championship. The Panthers fell 14 points shy of making the top 25, and were joined by the SIAC’s Benedict College, who missed the rankings by 10 points.

West Virginia State, regular season champs of the WVIAC, also received 14 points in the Division II rankings. The Yellow Jackets, along with the JCSU Golden Bulls, were selected 24th and 23rd respectively  for the Division II Bulletin top 25.

Win or Else For Virginia State's Faison?

It’s no stretch to guess that the Virginia State Trojans have to win big or lose close against Bowie State this weekend to make this season worth while. Not just because it’s homecoming, but because their coach’s job might depend on it.
