Dave Robbins to be Inducted Into Virginia Sports Hall of Fame

Legendary Virginia Union head basketball coach Dave Robbins will be inducted into the Virginia Hall of Fame in April 2010.

Going into the hall with him are his three Division II national championships, more than 700 career victories, a throng of former players who made it in the NBA, and a full-fledged fashion war with Mr. CIAA.

Southern Angling for Doug Williams as Head Coach AND Athletic Director?

That seems to be the sentiment of Grambling blogger Nick Deriso, but considering his allegiances, I wouldn’t be surprised if this a preemptive stoking of the flames. After all, Southern is chasing down the most famous Grambling Tiger not named Eddie Robinson.

Grambling legend Doug Williams says he didn’t talk numbers in a weekend interview with Southern, but many believe he discussed job responsibilities that go far beyond coaching at GSU’s hated in-state SWAC rival.
Williams met not with the athletics director at Southern, but with Tony Clayton, chairman of the Southern board of supervisors and Cleo Fields, a Baton Rouge lawyer and former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives.

That certainly suggests two things:

– There is a serious effort to lure Williams, despite his own efforts to downplay things.

– Perhaps the athletics director job itself is on the table.

Smoke Clears for Hampton's LaMarcus Coker

In true HBCU form, Hampton made a place for LaMarcus Coker, a former running back for the Tennessee Volunteers who was dismissed from the team for four failed drug tests.

Now, he eyes a chance at being drafted into the NFL.

It always amazes me that blue chip high school athletes don’t discover black colleges until they’ve smoked, drank, partied, flunked or cursed their way out of power conference schools. I admire Coker for being able to make the most of a do-over at Hampton, but I wish that he, or any other athlete that has ever transferred out of a BCS program, would have the heart to say “I wish I would’ve picked Hampton from the start.”

Don’t smoke. Monitor your heart health. Thus sayeth FAMU head coach Joe Taylor.
