CIAA Basketball Tournament Makes Broadcast Changes

The 2010 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be making some changes to its television broadcast schedule. As first reported by the Black College Sports Page, some tournament games will be broadcast outside of the ESPN family of networks for the first time since 2005.

...the CIAA Tournament television package will undergo some changes with the two men’s semifinal games airing live on TV One and the men’s final to air live on ESPNU. ESPN Plus will carry the women’s final. ESPN Classic has televised the men’s semifinals since 2005 with ESPN2 carrying the men’s final.

“We realize every year we have to do something different to keep the tournament fresh,” said CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry of the week-long event which draws record crowds and generates over $38 million for the local economy.

I’ve often wondered why the black networks, BET and TV One weren’t the first to consider broadcasting black college sports. ESPN owns the exclusive broadcasting rights to most of the Division I and II football and basketball contests, not because they are better equipped or more endeared to the sports, but because they know how lucrative advertising can be for the black college sports audience.

Oh well. There’s always those ‘Good Times’ and ‘Martin’ marathons to fall back on.
