Charlotte Officials Bicker Over CIAA Basketball Tournament Tickets
Charlotte city officials are in a heated dispute over the allotment of tickets for this week’s CIAA Basketball Tournament.
A dispute over tickets to next week’s CIAA tournament grew heated Friday, with Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James blasting the county manager over how the complimentary passes were distributed.
James accused Manager Harry Jones of providing tickets only to Democrats on the county board, which he said broke a tradition of them being offered to commissioners from both parties.
James said the move is stopping the board’s three Republican members from donating their tickets to a local charity that could auction them off and use the money to help the needy.
But it was not clear on Friday who received the tickets. Commissioners’ Chair Jennifer Roberts, a Democrat, said she had told officials she would buy her own tickets and was not getting any from the county. She and others criticized James’ remarks and said he was not telling the whole truth.
And elected officials wonder why their constituents don’t have faith in government at any level.
