CIAA Basketball Tournament Men’s Quarterfinal Previews – 2/25

The top seeds in the CIAA Basketball Tournament men’s bracket come out to play today, and the HBCU Digest has you covered with previews and polls.

1:00 pm #2-Bowie State vs. #7Elizabeth City State

Simply put, Bowie State has the interior presence in Duke Crews and Travis Hyman to compete for a CIAA title. Elizabeth City State, coming off a relatively easy outing against Fayetteville State yesterday, will have to counter with a stellar performance from guards Marquie Cooke and Trent Bivens to counteract the rebounding and interior prowess of BSU.

3:00 pm #3 Virginia Union vs. Shaw The Virginia Union Panthers are the tournament tested veterans of the group. The 2009 CIAA Basketball Tournament runners-up, VUU returns with an opening game against a Bears team that fought through poor shooting yesterday to knock off St. Paul’s by just nine points. Braxton and Brandon Byerson figure to be the catalysts for any Union success, but the game may come down to the play of Union forward Justin Ramsey and Shaw forward Rodney Callwood, who tallied 23 points and eight rebounds against the SPC Tigers.

7:00 pm #4-Chowan vs. #5-Johnson C. Smith

Chowan University wants to have its official coming out party at the 2010 CIAA Basketball Tournament. They are among the most balanced teams in the CIAA with stellar guard Jaleel Nelson and forward Lando Morrison, both seniors. They meet up with defending champion Johnson C. Smith University, led by Charlotte product and standout forward Jerry Hollis. JCSU took both regular season games from Chowan, and will look to clamp down defensively on a Hawks team averaging better than 70 points per game in the regular season.

9:00 pm #1-Saint Augustine’s vs. Livingstone

The evening concludes with the tournament debut of the CIAA’s best team the St. Augustine’s Falcons. They face a Livingstone team that handily dispatched of Virginia State last night, and will be playing in its second-straight prime time game. St. Augustine’s Chris Jordan will bring his 40 percent three-point shooting average to a Blue Bears team that survived poor shooting against the Trojans, and may be tired on run-outs and screens on the perimeter.

  1. I think most of the black college conferences are guilty of that, but I have to say, the CIAA has been diligent posting scores from the tournament games and keeping fans on Twitter up to date.

  2. THe CIAA does a poor job with posting up to date information on it website. You can not find any scores on the web site after any sporting event,Why is this so.
