Dee Stokes Fired as Winston-Salem State Head Women’s Basketball Coach
Dee Stokes has been fired as head women’s basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University, the university announced this morning.
Stokes had submitted her resignation in November but said she would finish this season to fulfill her contract. Athletics Director Bill Hayes saw things differently.
When Hayes walked into the Gaines Center on Monday night and saw the WSSU women trailing Hampton 60-10, he decided he had seen enough, several sources said.
The Lady Rams are 2-21 on the season. No announcements have been made about possible candidates to replace Stokes.

Stokes was preparing to resign anyway, so it might have been best to sever ties prior to the end of the season to get a new look on recruiting.
Got a feeling that things are going to turn around quickly for the Rams when they hit CIAA competition.
Bill Hayes has his faults, but he doesn’t take losing lightly. 85K goes a long way in Winston Salem. I bet WSSU cannot wait to return to the CIAA.
19-90, wow at $85k per year, I would have to say the Rams werent getting there moneys worth…Not that its a lot of money compared to the power conference, but wow. I often wonder How UCONN is able to be so dominate in womens basketball…I mean you are talking 60 game win streak and blowing out opponents in every game before halftime. And yet Ms. Dee can only muster 19 wins in 4 years…TRAGIC TRAGIC…….
