Delaware State Sued for Cutting Women’s Equestrian Team

An athlete saying she was promised a scholarship to join Delaware State University’s now-disbanded women’s equestrian team is suing the university.

A federal lawsuit filed Tuesday by Ontario native Melia Blakely accuses DSU of Title IX discrimination against female athletes. Blakely is seeking class-action status for the lawsuit, which alleges that she was promised a scholarship by DSU and learned only through a Facebook posting that the school was scrapping the team.

It was apparent that the Title IX implications associated with cutting women’s equestrian would spark national controversy, and this may be the first of many shoes to drop against the Hornets.

  1. [...] The title is the second-consecutive championship for the Lady Hornets. Now, if they could only corral some of these good vibes to combat the women’s equestrian lawsuit. [...]

  2. They brought the kid in, so they should live up to the original deal and let her get her degree.
