Fraternities, Sororities Assist Head Start Students in Reading Program
Members of several historically black fraternities and sororities recently read to Head Start students in Gadsden, Al in keeping with their “Greeks Read to Children” program.
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity rotated among the Head Start classrooms to read to the children, ages 3 to 5 years old.
Gesna Littlefield of Delta Sigma Theta said she enjoyed reading to the children. She came bearing gifts of candy and stuffed animals for the children who paid attention while she read.
“In my sorority … we are committed to community service,” Littlefield said. “This event is a part of our annual community service. We do this each year to familiarize the kidswith different books and let them know the importance of reading.”
An admirable program to say the least, but wouldn’t the 3-5 year olds involved have benefited more from college students reading to them? Not to take anything away from those members who participated, but it seems like a more tangibly rewarding experience for college kids and the children who will follow in their footsteps to have this kind of exchange.
