The Morgan State Bears return a healthy amount of players from last year’s squad – 17 starters on offense and defense combined – and have the biggest game in the university’s history on tap against Maryland’s flagship football program, the UMD Terrapins. Money, media coverage and the infinitely hopeful statement of “maybe” will abound throughout the first half of the season.
Surrounding the Bears’ inevitable loss at UMD, are games against Bowie State at home and Howard in the Urban League Classic in the Meadowlands. Bowie State is a CIAA title contender, and Howard…is still Howard. While they may be unreasonably close, they will be Bears’ victories.
Morgan comes back home to host Bethune-Cookman, which through the first three games of the season, should be just finding its identity. This should be a win for the Bears, and may prove to be a good catalyst for MSU going into a road game against an improved North Carolina A&T team. Unfortunately, catalysts don’t put points on the board, and the Bears will stumble in Greensboro before making their way back to Baltimore for homecoming against Delaware State. A homecoming victory against the Hornets will put the Bears at 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the conference, and will have MSU fans again hopeful as fall turns to winter.
And since we are talking about Grizzlies and not polar bears, winter doesn’t figure to be a good close-out to the season.
Each of the last three seasons, Morgan has faced Florida A&M, Norfolk State, South Carolina State and Hampton to conclude the year. Over that span, Morgan has a record of 3-9, with two wins against FAMU, and one win against Hampton. Considering that the Bears will draw the Rattlers and Spartans on the road, and the Bulldogs at home, that likely puts MSU on pace for the same outcome to end the 2010 season to match the last three; a win against Hampton at home in the season finale.
5-5 overall, 4-4 in the conference.
They don’t win everything, they don’t lose everything, and they don’t change anything. And in the end, for a football program that was non-existent for 22 years prior to its currently stretch of fairly middlin’, maybe’s that the best MSU fans can hope for.

Morgan State at North Dakota State on Sept 18 th ????
there’s only 10 games up there, hope i am correct!
I’m not sure the bears are gonna be able to beat the Bulldogs this year…they are coming off of a pretty good year and are returning all starters on defense except 1 and all on offense except 2. Bowie has always played us tough and with the series tied at 4-4, i’m not sure this isnt gonna be a possible loss
