Shaw University to Retire Flip Murray’s Jersey

Shaw University will retire the number 22 jersey of two-year CIAA basketball wonder Ronald “Flip” Murray on Monday, Feb. 8 in a ceremony following the Bears’ home game against Livingstone College.

At Shaw, the 6-3 Murray averaged 23 points per game (the career record for Shaw), 5.7 assists per game, and 1.9 steals per game.  He holds almost all of Shaw’s single season records, including points, steals, assists, points per game, and free throws made.

Murray is perhaps the most well-known player to come out of the CIAA and enter the professional ranks in the last 30 years, so it’s great publicity to acknowledge his professional accomplishments in this way. My only hope is that other players with legendary careers in the conference can get their just due, even if they aren’t NBA draft picks or tenured vets.
