Southern Baseball to Begin Season Without Full-Time Pitching Coach

First, money woes dictated hiring practices for the Southern University football team. Now, the SWAC champion baseball team is heading into the 2010 season without a full-time pitching coach, a position that SU Athletic Director Greg LaFleur also says is a casualty of the economy.

For now, the Jaguars are relying on former LSU pitcher Nate Bumstead, who wanted to get into coaching and met Cador through a mutual friend, asking to serve as a volunteer assistant.

James Spear, last season’s Sunday starter, is also serving as a graduate assistant.

Athletic Director Greg LaFleur said when the university is on better financial footing, it will look into giving Cador the full-time pitching coach it promised him, adding that “we’d like for all our programs to have the assistant coaches they are allowed to have.”
