Southern Releases 2010 Football Schedule
Southern University has released its 2010 football schedule, and it certainly plays to the sensibilities of Jags fans wanting the new look SU to prove their worth to black college football nation.
The theme for the Jags’ 2010 campaign, overtly and otherwise, appears to be legitimacy. How can they best legitimize firing their most successful coach in school history? How to justify the hiring of an unqualified replacement whose introduction took as many headlines as it did weeks to happen?
It’s apparent that despite the confusion and vague insight into the coaching moves, SU is driven to recapture the SWAC magic of 2003. That season, they thrashed a stout North Carolina A&T Aggies squad, and two cupcakes in Allen and Lincoln. Conference victories were not just certain, but the only surprise would be if they won by fewer than 30 points. A two-point home loss against Alcorn State proved the only blemish standing out among the Jaguar spots.
2010 will prove to be a lot spottier than many would hope for.
Sept. 4 SWAC/MEAC Challenge Orlando, Fla. TBA (Citrus Bowl Stadium)
Sept. 11 Arkansas-Monticello Baton Rouge, La. 6:00 P.M.
Sept. 25 @ Alabama A&M Huntsville, Ala. TBA (Louis Crews Stadium)
Oct. 2 Arkansas-Pine Bluff Baton Rouge, La. 6:00 P.M.
Oct. 9 Mississippi Valley St. Baton Rouge, La. 6:00 P.M.
Oct. 16 @ Jackson State Jackson, Miss. TBA (Miss. Veterans Mem. Stadium)
Oct. 23 @ Prairie View Houston, Tex. TBA(TBA)
Oct. 30 @ Alcorn St. Alcorn State, Miss. TBA (Jack Spinks Stadium)
Nov. 6 Texas Southern Baton Rouge, La. 6:00 P.M.
Nov. 13 Alabama St. Baton Rouge, La. 5:30 P.M.
Nov. 27 vs. Grambling St. New Orleans, La. 1:00 P.M.(State Farm Bayou Classic)
Four conference home games will delight Jaguar nation and a home opener against Div II. Arkansas-Monticello will be a fitting and rousing start for new head coach Stump Mitchell. Their toughest tests, UAPB and Texas Southern, will be much improved, but not improved enough to take one under the lights at Mumford.
However, the road may prove to be the weary land for an SU team that needs to gel quickly for a team with a new coach and new starters. The MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, and trips to Huntsville (Alabama A&M), Jackson (Jackson State) and Houston (Prairie View) may prove to be the undoing for a team that went 2-4 in contests played away from Mumford and at neutral sites in 2009.
And of course, they round out the season with a game in New Orleans that some of you may have heard of – a game that the Jags last won in 2007.
In short, its possible that the talent alone will put the Jaguars in position for a winning season; seven wins would be a stretch for the timing and talent across the schedule. But contention is what got Pete Richardson fired, and contention will likely again plague a Jaguar Nation that can’t justify how much of the SWAC West has caught up to, or passed them, on the way to consistent championship potential.

Jackson State wants Southern to travel. Money is made there not only for the game but for hotels, restaurants, etc. We are sick and tired of being abused by having our cars towed and being left out in the cold when it is time to enter the game. A better plan for admission to the stadium. Sit down with the mayor, the police department and come up with a plan. If they can’t promise us better, we will plan a boycott when we have to go to them.
PV cant play in that game because of the Labor Day Classic game against Texas Southern every year.Southern does not play FAMU on Oct.18.Representing the MEAC wll be Delaware St.
Why are’nt the SWAC schedules posted yet? The MEAC football schedules are posted. SU jplays FAMU on October 18th.
Could’ve fooled me. You don’t put up with mediocrity, yet SU fans accept the hiring of a coach with a career losing record.
Either read without bias, or don’t read my blog at all.
Dude, please stop pretending like you care about the state of Southern football. First of all, Richardson is second only to A.W. Mumford, and secondly, we don’t put up with mediocrity on the gridiron. The wheels were falling off, and it was a time for change. Either post a unbiased report or don’t mention us in your blog.
The Meac/Swac challenge needs butts in the seats; nobody travel’s like the Jaguar Nation!
Ideally, that’s what the fans want to see, but we all know that the MEAC and SWAC infrequently do what most of what fans want to see. I’ve also put in with the MEAC to find out the timetable on when they will announce which school will be participating. My money is on FAMU, but we’ll see. Likely will wind up being Hampton.
WHY IS SOUTHERN PLAYING IN THE MEAC/SWAC GAME? I THOUGHT THIS GAME WAS AWAYS BETWEEN THE CHAMPION OF EACH CONFERENCE. I WAS EXPECTING PRAIRIE VIEW AND SCSU TO PLAY IN THE CHALLENGE THIS YEAR. WHO IS REPRESENTING THE MEAC HOWARD????? LOL
