Albany State Holds Town Hall Meeting to Discuss State Budget Cuts
Students, faculty and administration gathered at Albany State University to discuss the impact of coming budget cuts to higher education in Georgia.
“School systems in Georgia are already at the bottom and I think higher education is going to help pull us out of it,” said Connie Leggett, Director of Title III Programs.
But leaders say they’ll have to try to make do with millions less.
“We’ve already made cuts, we’ve taken furloughs, but the level of cuts proposed are unreasonable for the education system,” said Leggett.
The budget cuts to state-supported HBCUs, which you can find at length here, affect HBCUs dramatically, because these schools were already operating with funds stretched to the max. Cuts programs and staff already overworked and underfunded, only jeopardizes enrollment and accreditation.
Alumni, local business leaders, and foundations need to mobilize quickly to solve these problems. Even though HBCUs have survived the stormiest of economic climates in the past, new levels of struggle and selectivity among potential students may put these schools in a new and more dangerous fight to survive.
