Bill Proposal Would Grant South Carolina State Alumni Appointment Power to Board of Trustees
A bill proposal in the South Carolina House of Representatives would grant the South Carolina State University National Alumni Association power to appoint a member to the university’s board of trustees.
S.C. State’s board is composed of twelve members elected by the General Assembly, plus the governor or his designee. Govan’s bill would add a fourteenth member.
Govan feels the legislation stands a better chance of being passed before the end of the session since no controversy surrounds the board.
“If it’s good for these other schools, it should be good for S.C. State,” Govan said. “I supported the College of Charleston bill and hope the House members will do the same for this bill.
“It allows the alumni, who are the financial backbone of support for the university, to put someone on the board. They want people who can reach out to others to financially support the university.”
Indeed, the alumni should have some leverage and voice when it comes to administration of the university, but I think that fundraising, recruiting, and outreach are far more effective when done outside of the university’s executive coalition; particularly for state-supported institutions.
