Budget Cuts to Significantly Impact State-Supported HBCUs in Georgia

The State of Georgia has released its recommendations to save more than $300 million dollars in its FY2011 budget. While no college goes unscathed, HBCUs in the state face uncertain futures in programming and infrastructure as a result of the cuts. Here are just some of the startling recommendations with page listings to find the full slate of cuts for each public institution.

Albany State University – (Page 34)
- Elimination of Graduate School Dean and Staff
- Cutting MPA, MBA, Spanish Language and Literature, Social Science Teacher Education,

Science Education, and Education Leadership programs

- Reduce telecommunications services, including voice mail & almost all cell phones other than President’s Cabinet.

Fort Valley State University (Page 57)

-Elimination of 50 percent of FVSU/University of Georgia Joint Research and Extension Georgia

Federal Plan of Work (Agricultural focused programs).
- Termination of 65 percent of all temporary staff positions.

Savannah State University (Page 69)
- Elimination of Student Employment Budget
- Elimination of Equipment Budget
- Elimination of Part-Time Faculty Budget

What needs to happen in light of these cuts is two-fold. The affected universities must be upfront with current and potential students about diminished services, programs and residential opportunities. And in turn, students who continue their education at these colleges must exercise patience and support for their institutions. There are going to be many overworked employees, and stressed out students.

But we are all in this together.
