Southern University System Narrows Presidential Search to Five
The search for a new president of the Southern University system has been narrowed to five candidates.
The top five, in order of their initial rankings based on the e-mail list sent to the Southern Board of Supervisors, are:
- Carolyn Meyers, outgoing president of Norfolk State University in Virginia.
- Leonard Haynes III, senior adviser in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office Of Postsecondary Education.
- Robert Jennings, former Alabama A&M University president in Normal, Ala.
- Belinda Childress Anderson, former Virginia Union University president in Richmond, Va.
- Marvin Yates, Southeastern Louisiana University vice president for student affairs.
It’s good to see a balance of female presidents included in this final list, as well as a quality composition of candidates with southern HBCU experience. However, each of these candidates comes with a speckled history at previous stops or positions, and this baggage ought to be unzipped and carefully reviewed by the public before the targeted three finalists are named.
