St. Augustine’s, Fayetteville State Capture 2010 CIAA Basketball Championships
St. Augustine’s College and Fayetteville State University captured the 2010 CIAA Basketball Tournament men’s and women’s championships last Saturday, and will each move on to compete in the NCAA Division II national tournament.
The top seed in the men’s bracket, St. Augustine’s faced a stiff challenge from seventh-seeded Elizabeth City State University en route to a 63-59 victory, but a significant interior in rebounding and interior scoring made the difference late in the second half. The Falcons outrebounded the Vikings 42-28, and outscored ECSU 40-26 in the paint.
The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos entered the CIAA Basketball Tournament as the fourth seed in the women’s bracket, and faced their stiffest competition in the semi-finals against Virginia State. FSU defeated Bowie State in the championship game 66-50, and commanded large lead through much of the second half with timely three-point shooting and tenacious rebounding. The Lady Broncos shot 8-19 from three for the game, and beat the Lady Bulldogs in rebounding 60-41.
