UNCF Positions Mother of Five For Success at Miles College
The United Negro College Fund has been a long-standing emblem of philanthropy and academic achievement among African-Americans. And the success story of Miles College senior Andrea Lewis furthers the UNCF’s pioneering legacy for minority students pursuing their dreams.
About four years ago, Andrea Lewis — a married mother of five — enrolled as a college freshman. Her decision to return to school and become a high school science teacher was hard. Money stood in the way. So did life as a mother and a wife. But she thought about her children.
“I felt like it would be hard to push my kids to go to college if I never went,” the East Lake resident said. “A lot of times they don’t do what you say. They do what they see.”
Now, at 33, the first-generation college student is two months from finishing at Miles College and several months from beginning a master’s program in education. She will graduate in May without hefty student loans to repay, thanks to the United Negro College Fund.
It must be stated that UNCF scholarships are usually reserved for students in the most dire of financial straits, but Lewis’ example is one that any student, regardless of financial circumstance, should emulate.
