The Department of Defense Research and Education Program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions

On Friday, May 28, 2010, the U S Department of Defense issued a funding announcement for Historically Black Colleges and Minority Serving Institutions (HBCU/MSI).

West Virginia HBCUs Create State Economic Impact

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission released its 2008 higher education economic impact study earlier this week. Bluefield State College and West Virginia State University, the state’s two HBCUs, generated more than $350 million for the state economy. From the report:

Bluefield State College

  • For FY 2008, the total business volume impact of Bluefield State College was $96.5 million.
  • The college directly employed 270 faculty and staff and had a total employment impact of 520 jobs in the state for FY 2008.
  • For FY 2008, Bluefield State College’s economic activity generated an estimated $22 million in employee compensation.
  • State appropriations to the college totaled approximately $6.3 million for FY 2008 which means that every dollar the legislature spent on the college turned into $15 in the state economy.

West Virginia State University

  • West Virginia State University’s total economic impact on the West Virginia economy was $254.1 million of business volume in fiscal year 2008.
  • For FY 2008, West Virginia State University’s economic activity generated $60.7 million in employee compensation in the stat
  • The university’s economic activity accounted for approximately 1,350 jobs in West Virginia in FY 2008.
  • In FY 2008, every dollar the state legislature spent on West Virginia State University turned into $16 in the state economy.

Hampton, Norfolk State Capture 2010 MEAC All-Sports Awards

Hampton University and Norfolk State University captured the women’s and men’s 2010 all-sports MEAC awards respectively, the conference announced yesterday. It is the ninth consecutive award for the Lady Pirates program, and sixth straight for the Spartans. From the release:

Hampton women’s programs totaled 74.5 points in the All-Sports tally.  The Lady Pirates won conference titles in Women’s Outdoor Track and Field and finished as runners-up in Women’s Indoor Track and Field and Women’s Tennis. Hampton also earned the 2010 Women’s Basketball Tournament title and the MEAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

North Carolina A&T finished second on the women’s side with 68.5 points.  The NSU women’s programs finished third with 68 points, followed by Howard with 65.

The NSU Spartans men’s programs earned conference titles in all three tracks including Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor track and Field and finished third in football and baseball.  The Spartans totaled 70 points eclipsing their closest challenge by 15 points.

The respective university’s each received a $20,000 reward in addition to the titles. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore received $10,000 for the conference’s highest graduation success rate.

Gov. Charlie Crist Approves Capital Projects for Florida A&M

Amid budget vetoes for several Florida colleges and universities, Governor Charlie Crist approved more than $38 million in appropriations for construction projects at Florida A&M University. From the Rattler Nation blog:

FAMU received the remaining $8.5M required to launch its Crestview Educational Center, $23M toward the estimated $30.9M price tag of Phase II of the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences building. Electrical upgrades, capital renewal and other infrastructure projects received $7M.

Crist vetoed $46M designated for a new University of South Florida Polytechnic campus in Lakeland, including money for a pharmacy building. He left the $6M in operational dollars for the Polytechnic pharmacy school intact.
