North Carolina A&T ‘#GHOE’ Movement Bolsters Homecoming Appeal

Five characters – #GHOE – has in recent days spawned an entire movement for students and alumni of North Carolina A&T State University, eagerly anticipating their 2010 homecoming festivities. An affectionate acronym for the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth,” #GHOE has yet to trend as a worldwide topic of interest, but is a social networking ‘Bat Signal’ of sorts for information, bragging rights and entrepreneurship surrounding one of the largest homecoming celebrations in HBCU culture.

“#GHOE on Twitter and Facebook has helped sales by assigning a label to a mindset or ideal, which in essence, is the goal of marketing,” says A. Tibias Thorne, N.C. A&T alumnus and Owner of Urban Argyle LLC, maker of official #GHOE apparel. “The beauty of Twitter and Facebook is that when people see something that a lot of people are talking about, they automatically feel a need to understand what’s going on or to be in the know. ”

To date, a multitude of parties, events, concerts and individual homecoming plans have all been tagged with the #GHOE label. With an student enrollment exceeding 10,000 and alumni base estimated at greater than 40,000, the cost efficient and viral nature of social networking may prove to be a critical economic and cultural tipping point for the university.

“When you take all of that and put it onto something tangible, it serves as a message to everyone that you are a part of something. Historical paraphernalia,” Thorne says.

Thorne says that 100 percent of his sales in just a few weeks of marketing can be directly traced back to the #GHOE influence, as all marketing and advertising for the exclusive homecoming apparel was done by social networking.

North Carolina A&T is not the first HBCU to experience an instant brand explosion via Twitter. This year, both Florida A&M University and Hampton University were the subjects of worldwide trending topics, started and perpetuated by students and alumni.

It remains to be seen if ‘#GHOE’ will achieve trending status by the time the Aggies take the field for their homecoming game against Morgan State University on October 9, but its clear that ‘#GHOE’ has forged a new path in branding and market affinity for North Carolina’s largest HBCU.

Alabama A&M, UConn Partner to Develop Ethiopian Clean Water Initiative

Researchers from Alabama A&M University and the University of Connecticut are partnering to target and develop clean water resources in Ethiopia. The institutions will work with five universities in the country to provide training and technical assistance to make clean water more accessible to more than half of the nation’s 80 million residents. From Mansfield Today:

Dr. Guiling Wang, an associate professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and director of the Environmental Engineering Program, reflected “The need for water is so great and pervasive in Ethiopia that we can have an immediate impact in helping the country address this problem.”

“The focus of our work is on capacity building. We won’t actually be solving the water problem directly,” she said.

“We will be helping our Ethiopian partners develop a more relevant engineering curriculum and a vibrant applied research program.

The program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development, and will ensure the creation of 11 separate clean water projects over the next two years.

Morehouse Alumnus John Monds Makes Georgia Political History

Morehouse College alumnus John Monds is the first black candidate in Georgia history to be listed on the general ballot for a gubernatorial election, but he hopes that his candidacy will prove to be more than just an interesting concept. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Monds’ platform focuses on individual rights and scaling back government involvement. He wants to lift all corporate regulations put in place by the state and let consumers decide whether casino gambling, horse racing, Sunday alcohol sales and industrial hemp would survive in Georgia.

He said his first order of business would be to fix the state’s economy. Monds said he would do away with the state income tax, instead relying on sales tax with local revenue-sharing, which Monds says is more fair.

“Everybody pays instead of a particular segment of the population,” Monds said. “You don’t want to punish those who produce, and that’s what an income tax does. We ought to encourage more production.”
