Nearly 16 years after the Environmental Protection Agency last declared drinking water safe in the predominantly black town of Triana, AL, Alabama A&M researchers Dr. Paul Okweye, a chemist, and Dr. Karnita Golson-Garner, an environmental scientist, recently discovered contaminants in the water supply exceeding federal limits for safe consumption.
Researchers collected 20 tap water samples, along with 100 surveys from houses in old and new areas of Triana.
They found concentrations of lead and other harmful chemicals exceeded limits set in place by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The AAMU research project also discovered some contaminants were present at levels suggesting “carcinogenic potential.” (WHNT)
