Former Marching 100 Director: Fall “Too Soon” for Reinstatement

Former Florida A&M Marching 100 Director Julian White told the Tallahassee Democrat yesterday that a fall reinstatement for the suspended band may be “too soon.” White retired as director of the band amidst ongoing review into the hazing death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion, and allegations that some persons charged with the death were not eligible to perform with the band at the time of the death.

“In all honesty, this fall may be too soon,” White said in an interview Friday with the Tallahassee Democrat. “Even though it was not the majority of the band members involved, the lesson needs to be really implemented and stressed that conduct is more important than the product of marching and entertaining.” (USA Today)

Jackson State, Alcorn State Partner for Mississippi Farmer Assistance Tour

The Jackson State University Farmers Network, a collaboration that includes the Center for Business Development and Economic Research in the JSU College of Business, Alcorn State University and several local farmers, has launched a tour of the state of Mississippi to enlighten socially disadvantaged farmers about the various agencies and available programs of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Clark Atlanta Provost Joseph Silver Named President of Alabama State

Alabama State University today announced Dr. Joseph H. Silver as the school’s next president. Dr. Silver currently serves as the provost and vice-president of academic affairs at Clark Atlanta University, and is the former vice president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

FAMU Marching 100 Director Julian White Resigns

In a statement released yesterday by his attorney, Florida A&M University Marching 100 band director Dr. Julian White resigned from his position. His resignation comes just days after 13 people were charged with the hazing death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion following the 2011 Florida Classic in Orlando, and one day after reports that nearly 100 individuals who performed with the band at the classic were not enrolled or formerly registered members of the ensemble.
