A concert and a community symposium on Civil Rights are just two of the keynote events highlighting this week’s inaugural events for new Virginia Union University President Dr. Claude Perkins. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Events begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the cantata composed by Willis L. Barnett, associate professor of music and VUU’s choir director.
“Canticle of Praise: Saga of a People” will be performed by a chamber orchestra made up of university and community musicians. The choir will feature VUU students and alumni.
The symposium at 7 p.m. Wednesday will include a talk about VUU by alumni Roslyn Brock, national chair of the NAACP board of directors, and Charles Sherrod, a civil-rights activist who was one of the “Richmond34″ arrested for attempting to desegregate lunch counters in downtown Richmond 50 years ago.
Dr. Perkins has served as acting VUU president since January 2009.
