6 Paine College Presents Conference on the Black Experience 9:00 am The 2012 Conference on the Black Experience will explore and celebrate contributions to the amalgam of history in the Americas, in particular North America, made by women of African Ancestry. Conference participants will examine the critical roles played by Africana women and how these roles have shaped [and continue to shape] the characteristic spirit of American culture. Paine College’s first Conference on the Black Experience was held in February 1981. The project was conceptualized and coordinated by former professors Dr. Leslie J. Pollard, and E. Fuller Callaway. Reverend Haynes will speak at the opening “Community Worship Service” Monday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Julius S. 20	21	22	23	24 Harris-Stowe State Presents...Kevin Powell 12:00 pm Writer, activist, entrepreneur and public speaker Kevin Powell, deemed one of America’s most important voices of the 21st century, will be on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University, Friday, February 24, 2012, at noon, in the Emerson Performance Center’s Bank of America Theatre. Powell’s presentation will address President Barack Obama, leadership, hip-hop, and the American dream —with a special session geared toward black males to follow. Both in 2008 and 2010, Powell was a Brooklyn, New York, Democratic candidate for Congress. His life work includes numerous essays, articles, reviews, and blogs through the years for publications such as Esquire, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Essence, Rolling Stone, The Amsterdam News, huffingtonpost.com, and Vibe, where he was a founding staff member and served as a senior writer, interviewing and profiling, among many others, General Colin Powell and the late Tupac Shakur. Johnson retired as the Multicultural Brand Manager for the Coca-Cola Company after more than 22 years of service. She was the recipient of The Coca-Cola Company Outstanding Marketing Person of the Year Award for three consecutive years.

Paine College Presents Conference on the Black Experience

The 2012 Conference on the Black Experience will explore and celebrate contributions to the amalgam of history in the Americas, in particular North America, made by women of African Ancestry. Conference participants will examine the critical roles played by Africana women and how these roles have shaped [and continue to shape] the characteristic spirit of American culture.

Paine College’s first Conference on the Black Experience was held in February 1981. The project was conceptualized and coordinated by former professors Dr. Leslie J. Pollard, and E. Fuller Callaway. The conference is designed to examine the historic and cultural experiences of Black people throughout the Diaspora and the resultant actions and reactions.The conference will be held on the campus of historic Paine College from February 6-9, 2012.

Wiley College Presents...Religious Emphasis Week

Wiley College will celebrate Religious Emphasis Week February 13-16, 2012, with a slate of community worship services and activities that will be led by two prominent pastors, the Reverend Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, the pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, and the Reverend Michael W. Waters, MDiv., pastor of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Dallas, Texas. Reverend Haynes will speak at the opening “Community Worship Service” Monday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel, and Reverend Waters will speak Thursday, February 16 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel for the” College and Community Worship Service.”

Reverend Haynes and Reverend Waters will bring messages inspired by the week’s scripture-focused theme, “Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind.” The theme is based on the scripture Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mid. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is –His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Reverend Waters will also lead a “Theology of Hip Hop” Student Forum on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in the College’s Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center.

Wiley will also honor six East Texas pastors with a Clergy of the Award during a noon luncheon on Tuesday, February 14. Pastors to be honored are the Reverend Harry Blake of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church of Shreveport, Louisiana; the Reverend Michael Black of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas; the Reverend Develous Bright of Ebenezer United Methodist Church of Marshall, Texas; the Reverend Rodger Garbs of First United Methodist Church of Marshall, Texas; the Reverend Steve Miller of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas; and the Reverend James Webb of Bethesda Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas.

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III has served as pastor at Friendship West for 28 years, where he has grown the congregation from hundreds to nearly 12,000. He has led the congregation with a commitment to Christ, passion for people, and yearning for community transformation. Rev. Haynes champions social change through his service on numerous boards including the National Action Network, and the Conference of National Black Churches.

Reverend Michael W. Waters, the founder and Senior Pastor of Joy Tabernacle, was named among the top young leaders in America by Ebony Magazine (April 2009). Reverend Waters has strong commitment to urban renewal and community transformation as evidenced by his founding of two nationally recognized programs: The Macedonian Project, an outreach ministry that works to empower adolescent males; and the SMU Civil Rights Pilgrimage. He is a much sought-after preacher and lecturer who has appeared on “The NBC Nightly News,” and “ ESPN Live.” His keen insights have been quoted by noted journalist Bill Moyers.

Other activities during Religious Emphasis Week will include the” Mid-Week Chapel Service,” on Tuesday, February 14 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel, which will feature a musical tribute to Black History by the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College, and “Expressions of Our Faith,” a student-led worship service, which will be held on Thursday, February 16 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel.

Harris-Stowe State Presents...Kevin Powell

Writer, activist, entrepreneur and public speaker Kevin Powell, deemed one of America’s most important voices of the 21st century, will be on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University, Friday, February 24, 2012, at noon, in the Emerson Performance Center’s Bank of America Theatre. Powell’s presentation will address President Barack Obama, leadership, hip-hop, and the American dream —with a special session geared toward black males to follow.

Both in 2008 and 2010, Powell was a Brooklyn, New York, Democratic candidate for Congress. His life work includes numerous essays, articles, reviews, and blogs through the years for publications such as Esquire, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Essence, Rolling Stone, The Amsterdam News, huffingtonpost.com, and Vibe, where he was a founding staff member and served as a senior writer, interviewing and profiling, among many others, General Colin Powell and the late Tupac Shakur. Additionally Kevin has been a writing fellow for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, as well as a Phelps Stokes Fund senior fellow.
