Legacy Bowl Vote Postponed in MEAC, Finance Details Revealed in Letter

A vote from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s executive council will likely be pushed back until the spring of 2011, according to conference Commissioner Dennis Thomas. Additionally, the Times and Democrat has published details of a letter concerning the potential post-season black college bowl game sent from Thomas to South Carolina State University President Dr. George Cooper:

In Thomas’ response, he confirmed the $600,000 guaranteed payment the MEAC would receive and share among its members for sending the regular-season champion to face the SWAC champion on Dec. 17, 2011, in Atlanta.

Thomas also indicated the representing school at the Legacy Bowl would have to use portions of the guaranteed money to cover all team, band and cheerleader expenses, but that does not prohibit negotiating with other sponsors to offset costs.

Thomas also told Dr. Cooper that at-large berths in the FCS playoffs would still be available to the MEAC, but in recent years, these berths have largely been exclusive to the conference champion.

There are those who engage in delusions when it comes to HBCU football. Never do they address what the colleges priorities. The facts will reveal every HBCU football program in the country operate in the red when all cost are factored. Many of these colleges face deficits budgets that threaten accreditation .Yet they still put the football program on the front burner immune from cutting .Others want to divert precious resources from academic programs to make the football team more competitive . This writer doubt if the net revenue after deducting all cost associated with winning a small college national championship will equal the MEAC /SWAC split in the referenced article.

I would hope they have postponed to re-evaluate the ridiculousness of the whole idea. If supporters of HBCU programs protested and didnt attend games the loss revenue from those individuals would off set any guarantee dollars or peanuts. Who cares about 2 HBCU teams playing each other…Gone are the 50′s and 60′s the era’s where we couldnt intermingle with colleges outside of the HBCU arena. We need to continue to take our bumps and bruises in the play-offs, until we start advancing further in the playoffs until we start actually gaining respect outside of the HBCU umbrella. The only way to do that is playing outside of the HBCU conferences and winning these games , advancing in the playoffs and eventually winning some NCAA championships….thats where the money is to be made…winning NCAA championships….Not South Carolina State vs. Prarie View for a Heritage Bowl trophy and a $600k check….

One has to suspect the vote was pushed back in order to give Dennis Thomas time to obtain corporate sponsorship dollars in order to fully pay all expenses of the MEAC Champ in the game. As it stands now, the share the MEAC Champ would get, will not cover their travel expenses and to keep the band, cheerleaders, Team and other personnel on campus the week after finals.
